Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family of Ford, they were managed by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford began acting during her teens, and was part of the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she wasn't a good fit there. Ford applied instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured the position she wanted on her third attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Through the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, which were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
